I am fed up with the games already. I am as patriotic as the next person, I will watch the games on tv, I will cheer for the British competitors. BUT
Am I the only one fed up with all the Olympic adverts? The Olympic programmes, the articles in the papers? the squabbling in Parliament, the lash ups in provisions (G4S?), the potential for terrorism, the potential for strikers, the way the police and army are called in to sort it all out. The costs of it all ? don’t get me started on that. I know it is supposed to be good for the country, I know it is supposed to market us to the world. Sorry, are we in a fit state to be exposed like this? The commercialism, the sponsorship, I hate it. I also don’t like the fact that athletes and others in many of the sports are no longer amateurs, they are all professionals, earning loads of money. In many countries athletes don’t have the benefits the better off athletes have, is that a level playing field? Don’t think so.
Having said all that, I am sat watching the Dancing on Ice medallists special – it explains a great deal about the mentality of Olympians, and what they have to go through to succeed. I admire those Olympic stories of those who have got to the games despite what has happened to them or in their country.
Roll on the next few weeks of sporting tv, but please spare us the adverts!
